Neil MacDonald Dunmore, PA Obituary-Death: Founding Partner, Attorney Has Died at 60

The Scranton and Dunmore, Pennsylvania communities are mourning the loss of Attorney Neil F. MacDonald, who passed away on Monday, June 1, at the age of 60. A respected lawyer, founding partner, devoted husband, loving father, and passionate community advocate, his passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, and all those he served throughout his career.

Born in Scranton, Neil was the son of the late Neil J. MacDonald and Dorothy Grudis MacDonald. He remained deeply connected to the region that shaped him, becoming one of the area’s most respected legal professionals and community supporters. A member of St. Patrick’s Parish, he carried his faith and commitment to service throughout his life.

Neil’s academic path reflected his discipline and dedication. He graduated from Scranton Preparatory School before attending the University of Scranton. He later earned his Juris Doctor degree, graduating cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law. Following his studies, he went on to build a distinguished legal career and became a founding partner of Durkin MacDonald LLC, where he earned the respect of clients and colleagues alike.

While his professional achievements were significant, those who knew Neil best say his greatest qualities were his character, generosity, and commitment to others. He was known for his willingness to help—whether offering legal guidance, supporting friends and family, volunteering his time, or simply sharing his humor and presence.

Friends and colleagues often described him as someone who could light up any room with wit and warmth. He built lasting relationships across the community and was deeply proud of his roots in Dunmore and Scranton. His dedication to improving the lives of others extended far beyond his legal practice.

Outside of work, Neil enjoyed the outdoors and embraced life with enthusiasm. Whether kayaking, working on personal projects, or spending time with loved ones, he approached life with energy, optimism, and purpose.

Family was central to his life. Just weeks before his passing, Neil married Kathleen Gleason on April 27, marking a joyful new chapter in his life. He was a proud father to his sons, Neil Patrick MacDonald and Ethan Michael MacDonald, and a loving stepfather to Maeve Gleason.

He is also survived by his brothers Greg, Brian, and Tom, along with their families, as well as numerous extended relatives, friends, and colleagues who will miss him deeply.

In a final reflection of his character, Neil spent his last hours helping family members in the garden—an act that symbolized a lifetime defined by service, kindness, and love for others.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 6, at St. Patrick’s Church in Scranton, followed by interment at Cathedral Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Neil W. Regan Funeral Home.

Neil F. MacDonald will be remembered for his compassion, generosity, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to others. His legacy will continue to live on in the lives he touched and the community he helped shape.
